The Christian calendar invites us to mark time by the life of Jesus. The season of Lent will soon begin. It’s a season of prayerful reflection as we pay attention to our own brokenness and need for Jesus.

The first day of Lent is called Ash Wednesday. We start with a posture of humility. Our lives are fragile and broken. We pray, “Jesus, meet us here.”

During this special worship gathering, we receive the mark of ashes in the shape of the cross. This symbolic act remind us of three things: 1) our own mortality (“dust you are, and to dust you will return, 2) the vital role of repentance in life with God, and 3) in life and in death, we belong to Jesus.
